Computing
At Redhill School we offer a rich and varied Computing curriculum incorporating all the new requirements of the National Curriculum. We have invested in new equipment to allow children access to iPads, laptops and digital recording equipment as an integrated part of their daily lessons. We have worked in partnership with Entrust over several years to develop staff expertise and ensure they are confident with computing skills such as teaching computer programming and effective systems of monitoring the progress of children with these skills, including self-assessment.
We use the Entrust Scheme of work for Computing which is a progressive, spiral curriculum. It clearly sets the aims of the programme, including the knowledge and understanding to be gained at each stage. It is well planned and sequenced building on what has gone before and preparing pupils for what comes next.
Key learning outcomes are identified for each unit and show what pupils need to know, or should be able to demonstrate, as a skill in order to succeed in subsequent phase of learning or when they revisit it at a later stage. They also help teachers check pupils’ understanding to make inform teaching.
Expected end points for the end of Key Stage determine key milestones in terms of skill progression.
One of the most important elements of our Computing curriculum is raising children's awareness and understanding of keeping safe on line and how to report any issues which arrive.
We also aim to promote being a good digital citizen and have developed a program of Digital Leaders who support the younger children in developing their knowledge of safety and to promote an understanding of responsible internet use.
As part of our wider curriculum focus, we have been looking at real life examples of using technology in the workplace and Year 6 took part in an exciting trip to the Apple store to take part in a coding workshop:
Our work in Computing led to Redhill being awarded with the Link2ICT award for innovation in Schools in 2018.
